A Tourism Policy
Councils may consider formalising their commitment by formally adopting a Tourism Policy. The reasons for this include:

- Forward planning and budget allocations for tourism are essential for an integrated and co-ordinated approach,
- Industry sector representation in an area may change, thus altering emphasis and thrust,
- Council is often the provider of substantial tourist plant and infrastructure.
Model objectives:
In establishing a Tourism Policy, councils may consider listing as its major objectives:
- To recognise tourism as a social and economic force and as an employment generator,
- To foster and create a community awareness of the benefits of tourism,
- To ensure Council will guide and influence the sustainable development of tourism within the municipality, including the protection and conservation of natural, cultural and built heritage,
- To provide the basic facilities and infrastructure sufficient to encourage appropriate tourism development,
- To ensure facilities within the area are adequate to cater for visitors and residents,
- To ensure that tourism activity fits with community values and aspirations.
