A Tourism Policy

Bendigo Town Hall

Councils may consider formalising their commitment by formally adopting a Tourism  Policy. The reasons for this include:

  1. Elected councils can change every few years, therefore, continuity of attitude and decisions is assisted by a document to which issues can be referred,
  2. Forward planning and budget allocations for tourism are essential for an integrated and co-ordinated approach,
  3. Industry sector representation in an area may change, thus altering emphasis and thrust,
  4. Council is often the provider of substantial tourist plant and infrastructure.

Model objectives:

In establishing a Tourism Policy, councils may consider listing as its major objectives:

  1. To recognise tourism as a social and economic force and as an employment generator,
  2. To foster and create a community awareness of the benefits of tourism,
  3. To ensure Council will guide and influence the sustainable development of tourism within the municipality, including the protection and conservation of natural, cultural and built heritage,
  4. To provide the basic facilities and infrastructure sufficient to encourage appropriate tourism development,
  5. To ensure facilities within the area are adequate to cater for visitors and residents,
  6. To ensure that tourism activity fits with community values and aspirations.
