Tourism Impact Model
The Tourism Impact Model (TIM) is an Excel-based tool available free of charge to all local government authorities. It uses available research data, as well as user inputs and assumptions, to assess tourism impacts at the municipal level. Information on visitors relates to money spent in the council area and its impact on jobs and population change, and the relationship of these to council spending, income, rates, charges, grants and so on. It is primarily designed for regional areas and doesn’t work well for metropolitan councils.
TIM also provides a method to estimate the tourism impact on the local council budget, and shows how to measure the economic, infrastructure, social/ cultural and environmental benefits to the community.
For more information about TIM, see the fact sheet under the ‘Sustainable and Indigenous Tourism’ section of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources website at www.industry.gov.au or contact David Hughes on (02) 6213 7081
